Call for Papers:

International Junior Scholars Workshop on the Role of Law in Diverse Societies

On June 15th and 16th 2022 the Center for the Study of Multiculturalism and Diversity at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem will hold an international conference on the Role of Law in Diverse Societies. As part of the conference, we plan to hold a workshop for junior scholars.

The conference will examine the role of law in shaping social conflicts of various kinds: ethnic, religious, political, and others. Law guides the behavior of individuals and groups through the creation of sanctions and incentives and through the expression of legitimacy or the denial thereof. Law facilitates (or impedes) social cooperation through the creation of tools that make it easier (or harder) to form associations and through institutions that enforce certain norms (and discourage others). Legal tools are, generally and inevitably, plastic: they can ignite conflict or foster reconciliation; transform diversity into richness and growth, or into conflict and hostility. And, of course, the consequences are never uniform. What benefits some may harm others, in complicated and nuanced ways.

The plasticity of law creates an urgent need in today’s diverse and often conflicted societies to map the ways in which law facilitates cooperation and trust, as well as the ways in which law impedes the ability to achieve social goods. We invite papers that examine these questions and are authored by scholars who are nearing completion of their PhD/SJD/LLD, have recently completed their PhD/SJD/LLD, or have recently been appointed to a tenure track position.

Eligibility and Selection: To be eligible, a scholar should be untenured and no more than 7 years from the award of their doctoral degree. Scholars will be selected based on the novelty and importance of their contribution and the soundness of their methods. We particularly encourage the submission of empirical works (of all methods); theoretical submissions are also welcome.

Participation: Selected scholars will be invited to present their work in a workshop format in which they will be assigned a senior commentator. After the remarks of the commentator, all of the participants will have a chance to join in the discussion. The selected scholars will also attend the full conference program, with the intention of fostering an international community of scholars working on problems of law and diversity and establishing cooperative relationships between participants.

Travel: The travel costs of authors who will be invited to participate in the workshop will be covered by the Center for the Study of Multiculturalism and Diversity.

Paper Submission: Submissions should be sent to Ms. Noa Kabison (diversity@mail.huji.ac.il) with the subject line: “International Junior Scholars Workshop.” Papers may be either published or works-in-progress, but must be complete manuscripts that include all necessary background and principal results.

.

The deadline for submission is March 30th, 2022.

Decisions are expected by April 30th, 2022.
